Installation and Configuration of Microsoft Internal Outgoing SMTP Mail Server on Windows XP Professional - Open Port 25 on Firewall

Overview

RDP suggests using a Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 server as the outgoing SMTP server. See Installation and Configuration of Microsoft Internal Outgoing SMTP Mail Server on Windows 2000/2003. 

For small customers using RDP in a peer-to-peer environment (where there is not a Windows 2000/2003 server available), it is possible to use a Windows XP as the outgoing SMTP server.  Workstations sending a test Email with RDPWin mail fail with the following error:

"A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond".

This error can occur when using a Windows XP workstation as the outgoing SMTP mail server.  The personal firewall on the Windows XP SMTP workstation will block all Email from other computers by default.  Normally RDP suggests using a Windows 2000 or 2003 server as the outgoing SMTP server, however Windows XP will work with the steps provided below.  

Solution

When using a Windows XP workstation as the outgoing SMTP server, you must configure the Windows Firewall on that workstation to allow access by Port 25, the mail port, as follows:

1. Configure SMTP normally on the Windows XP workstation.  See "Installation and Configuration of SMTP Mail Server".  
2. On the Windows XP workstation that will be the outgoing SMTP server, Select Start-Settings-Control panel-Windows Firewall.
3. Select the "Exceptions" tab within Windows Firewall
4. Click the "Add Port" button, and add a port as below and save the settings
5. Retest by sending a test Email from another workstation to this Windows XP workstation.  See "Sending a test Email" below.

To test that the outgoing SMTP server is working, send a test Email from RDPWin as follows:

1. Start RDPWin
2. Navigate to Reporter - Configuration - Email send test Email.  
3. Configure the screen as below, using an Email address that is outside your domain, such as "Test@Hotmail.com".  Note:  It is important to always test using address outside your domain to verify that Email Relay is configured properly.
