New Windows 2000 Data Server May be Very Slow if Top-of-Line 2GHz CPU

Added 1/23/2003 - Article ID#: K000140

A new Windows 2000 Data Server may be very slow when running RDP from the Server or when connected to this server with Citrix or Terminal Services.  It may take 4-5 seconds for each keystroke to appear.  To verify if you have this problem, proceed as follows:

  1. Verify if the Windows 2000 server has a 2GHz CPU or faster.  This may require a call to your hardware vendor

  2. From the Windows server, select start-run and type in "CMD"   (Press <Enter>)

  3. From the command prompt, type "Edit"     (Press <Enter>)

  4. Type "this is a test" into the Edit program.   If your CPU is 2GHZ or faster, and each keystroke takes 4-7 seconds to appear on the screen, you most likely have the problem, which may be solved with the steps below:

Solution

This is a known problem with Windows 2000 Server and CPU's that run at 2GHz or faster.   Microsoft has identified this problem with article number "Q320694"  A fix from Microsoft is available.  The following link can be used to view the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q320694.

NetMeeting or
Remote Desktop
To provide the highest level of support, RDP requires access to your system with Remote Desktop or Microsoft NetMeeting.  Carbon Copy and other remote tools are not supported.  See Hardware Requirements for more details.
RDPWin RDPWin is our Microsoft .Net Windows-based software.  It accesses the same database at the same time as your existing RDP-DOS and Internet Reservation Module (IRM).  Please review:
For more information see Hardware Requirements.
