Clean Up Disk Space from RDPWin / IRM Installations

Added 10/19/2006 - Article ID#: KWin0030

Overview

Each time the RDPWIN Server, RDPWIN Client, or the IRM are installed, Windows stores information in the "Downloaded installations" folder.  This can consume a tremendous amount of disk space, since each installation is over 30 MEGS.  Many machines around here could have three or more GIGABYTES of space wasted.

Solution

Everyone should clean up portables as follows after installations:

  1. Windows Explorer
  2. Expand "C:\\Windows\DownloadedInstallations".
  3. In the right pane, highlight all the downloaded installations and delete them.
  4. Right-click the "recycle bin" on the desktop and "empty recycle bin".
  5. Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup.  Run this to delete "other" stuff.
  6. Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter.  Defrag the "C" drive.

Since there are TONS of these "Downloaded Installations" on your laptops prior to following these steps, it is important to do this as soon as possible and repeat the process every month.
