Windows 2000 or XP clients cannot login to RDP - "NTVDM.EXE has generated errors

Last Updated 12/27/2005 - Article ID: K000141

RDP uses the Pervasive.SQL database, which is installed on the data server and also each client workstation that accesses the RDP System. RDP supports the current version of Pervasive and one version previous.   A wide variety of problems can occur when using incorrect versions of the Pervasive Server and/or Pervasive Client.  To determine the version of Pervasive see:

When Pervasive is installed incorrectly, or an older version of Pervasive Client is used, one of the one of the  following errors may be  displayed when logging into RDP or using the system.

NTVDM.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application
Return to RDP Prompt with no error message displayed

Solution - Workstations

The errors above can be generated by a variety of problems, however, in most cases these errors indicate an old version or improper installation of the Pervasive Client.  To solve this problem on a workstation see "Updating Pervasive Client on a Workstation or the IRM Bridge"".

Solution - RDP Data Server

If one of the errors above occurs on the Data Server it may mean that Pervasive was not installed correctly on the Data Server.  This can be tested using Pervasive System Analyzer on the Data Server.

Note:  If the data Server is using Version 7.xx or earlier, it must be updated to the current version.  See How to Verify the Version of Pervasive Engine on the RDP Data Server
